This unique island is 58 seamiles away from Kavala. Completely different from Thassos but still worth visiting. This island is actually a huge mountain ( almost 1700m ) rising from the sea. There you can find just a few sand beaches, no bays but nature at its best.: plane-tree forests, waterfalls, walking paths and a famous excavation site.
Samothraki is a wild, rough island , where even in summer there can be strong winds. It’s necessary to watch the weather forecast before sailing there.
There is a safe port in Kamariotissa. From there you can take the bus or rent a car to explore the relatively small island. A nice place to visit is the mountain village Chora (6 km away from kamariotissa) and the village Therma. From Therma you can visit the small waterfalls “Gria Vathra”. A walk along the river Fonias is also a good idea. After a 30 minute walk you will reach a bigger waterfall and if you don’ t mind the cold water you can go for a refreshing bath in the lake.
